brandihill > It is really hard for me to orchestrate things AND take pictures- so excuse the pictures they are a mess! But these next few photos will show my school and the students who benefited from the school supplies you collected!
This is a better picture of the entire group- THANKS AGAIN for all the students, organizations, and individuals who helped me raise the money for shipping the supplies to that side! Please take the time to view the recently posted albums to see where your donations are going.
brandihill > This is a group of boys that I am working with in an after school program I have started. This program is modeled after the PAL in my home town (www.paljax.org) PALS slogan is “filling playgrounds NOT prisons” The program here in South Africa aims to prevent long term criminal activity amongst at-risk youth through early educational/recreational activities.

Basically, these kids were selected for their“trouble maker” status amongst the community. This stereotype is echoed through the township---its hard to explain to people the negative impacts on labeling …. How do you say, “self-fulfilling prophecy” in tswana? :) Anyways, these kids are REALLY REALLY good in soccer (a little violent, but good)! By far the best in the township! And they play barefoot, and still manage to beat the rich kids from across town that have Nike cleats! However, they can’t register to play in the league because they can’t afford the league fees ($10 per kid every year) and they can’t afford uniforms! It’s really quite depressing because the field the league uses is RIGHT next to Bosabosele (the school these kids attend), so my kids just get stuck watching the others play through the fence. Did I mention, my kids play much better soccer than these kids? I am seeking anyone interested in helping getting uniforms donated-- any organization or individual that would like to help with this, it would be much appreciated—email me PLEASE!
brandihill > This is an incredible fringe benefit to this low paid job. I get cards like these from the kids. Hand made complete with the cutest spelling errors !!! I just love these kids!
brandihill > I have this card hanging on my refrigerator, because its grammatical errors were hilarious “you are the best teacher in the hole white world” :) “I am sorry the class makes you bad with their noise” To view the photo larger just run your mouse over the right side and select the size you want to view the photo in.
brandihill > The government supplies lunch for the children on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. While it is VERY small portions-basically a tease, to the older students. 3 bites and its gone- which is unfortunate because this meal to many of these kids, especially the orphans, is most likely the only one they will receive all day. There is huge problem with kids only coming to school on M,W, F in order to get the free food. Then not showing up the remainder of the week :( Lunch time is when I see a lot of the hunger tendencies that I expressed in the newsletter. Like hoarding/taking unattended food or eating the very small amounts of crumbs left over on other student’s plates etc.
brandihill > This is Mrs. Rue- she is one of the local women who cooks for the school in exchange for lunch. Also, I got the local grocery store to donate outdated food so dinner can be served to the kids in my after school program- Mrs. Rue stays afterwards and cooks for my program as well- in exchange for dinner for her and her family—trading and bartering is amazing here- it works so well for all parties involved….The kids get a good meal and Mrs. Rue and her family get to eat, her husband comes as well which is good for the older boys in my group to have him around to eat dinner with every night. This dinner is a great incentive that keeps the boys coming everyday to school. Because you cant go to the after school program unless you come to school that day. Since I started dishing dinner- the attendance is 100% with the kids in the program!
brandihill > cabbage stew (despite its appearance its actually quite nice)
brandihill > Porridge (made from maize) a staple item here, very nutritious, very inexpensive (well until recently with the inflation ) many here struggle to buy this once cheap food. A huge bag cost about $35
brandihill > These next few images are typical houses in the Thabane Township. Thabane is a shanty-town, just envision 15 square miles of these shack-like structures built from any scrap metal that can be found- this is Thabane. This is where my students live. There are more pictures later showing more of the township . Despite not having basic amenities such as running water and electricity- they still get up and come to school!

Many of these residents are immigrants fleeing their home countries due to economic hardships such as Zimbabwe. They come to South Africa to find a better life.

brandihill > My favorite kid because he tells me EVERYTHING the other kids are doing!
brandihill > Thanks to everyone who helped in collecting school supplies in the U.S. and raising money for shipping, I was able to deliver bags of supplies to the neediest orphans at my school. The kindergartners thru 3rd grade actually received bookbags as well. Then the remaining 600 kids at the school received 2 pencils, 2 pens and 1 eraser each. The teachers even got a bundle of writing utensile AND the remainder supplies where given out in the township. This is me and the kids. I am a little frantic in this picture because the kids were at the time, fighting over who was going to get to take the picture with my $5,000 camera :) which explains the angle :) Please visit here: to see and download all the images! Please don’t hesitate to contact me if your organization is interested in helping again!
